Grey's Anatomy 10x21 Change of Heart review

Change of Heart is the 21st episode of GA season 10. Last week we were left with Cristina not winning the Harper Avery Award. I'm still pissed. I get it, it's for the plot, it's to accommodate Sandra Oh's leaving this show, BUT STILL. Come on, it's CRISTINA YANG. If anybody deserves the Harper Avery Award, it's HER. She needs some justice, okay.

Oh heads up, this episode explained everything, and gave a big big BIG change of opinion for me. Shonda Rhimes is an absolute genius.

--- SPOILER ALERT ---

Richard Webber and Meredith Grey did a nice summary of how I felt.

Spot on, Mer!

Cristina was a wreck in this episode. First of all, she left Owen and Mer the morning after the ceremony without any words. Then out of nowhere she barged into the OR where she then performed a surgery on the heart-problem-siblings, and it went horribly.

Long story short, sister #1 donor heart turned out to be a damaged organ, so she needed another new heart, which was to be available soon. Meanwhile, sister #2 also went through a heart failure so she needed that new heart as well. The parents couldn't make the decision on who should get that heart, so Cristina had to make the impossible decision.

Cristina decided to give the heart to sister #2 since she had the better chance to be stable. Sister #1 was supposed to use an artificial heart for a while, but it didn't work out, and later on she died. Cristina seemed to hit the rock bottom after this.

You see, in Grey's Anatomy universe, Harper Avery award is the biggest achievement a surgeon can have, the ultimate dream, especially for someone like Cristina, who has always been so determined to be the best, far beyond everyone else. So yeah, her losing, no matter how easily she seemed to take it, still broke her.

But then, we found out about this.

Politics? What politics?

Damn politics, am I right?

Once Owen told Cristina about this, she's changed. It's like a button was pushed and Cristina just changed.

But actually this made everything clear. It's now clear how we are going to see Sandra Oh leaving the show. I can already see how the writers are going to send Cristina off.

It's obvious now that no one from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital will win a Harper Avery, ever. So, the way I see it, in Cristina's mind there's no more point of being there. I'm guessing that this will be the ultimate reason for her leaving the hospital. She will have a chance of winning the award if she works at other hospital, one that isn't owned by the Avery Foundation. So why should she stay in Seattle, right?

I've been a fan of Sandra Oh/Cristina Yang ever since I first watched this show years ago. And I'm really sad that she's not coming back next season. BUT, this plot, this story line, it actually makes me want Cristina to leave. Because she deserves it. Because it's just right.

Shonda Rhimes, you are damn brilliant. I never thought there will be a day when I will be glad to see my most favourite character ever leaving a show. But here I am now.

My guess is, after this Cristina will move to another hospital, perhaps with some persuasion from Preston Burke, maybe they will become a team of cardio Gods or something. But yeah, I'm almost 100% sure that this is how we'll see Cristina off.

A quick review about other surgeons' story line:
  • Alex Karev seemed sure to take the private practice job. He even told the board about it. Is it final? Idk. I still stand by my opinion last week, that he'll go away for a while but he'll come back.
  • Bailey's HIV-immuno research got stopped since the boy's mom decided to no longer give consent for her son's treatment. But at the very last scene, we saw Bailey holding her virus while looking at the boy. Maybe she'll keep doing the treatment behind the mom's back? It's dangerous, but Bailey's story line has always been kinda extreme, so we shall see
  • Dr Webber was planning a marriage proposal to Catherine Avery, but due to all the things about the award, it seemed that the plan was off.
  • Jackson and April were still fighting. But now things got more complicated because oops

--- SPOILER ENDS ---

I give Change of Heart 4.5/5 noise. At first look, yeah it seemed like a regular episode, but I'm still amazed by how Shonda did her magic for Cristina's story line. Very well done.
